    • Hwabuk found something similar, though WordPress did not agree with his posting, so I’ll do it.

Apparently in 2008 there existed not only a 보천보 《은하수》 making recordings, but also this combination 공훈국가합창단과 《은하수》 (SMC & “Unhasu”) performed on stage. The location and time of the two videos are different, but interestingly they start with exactly the same melody, the setting and outfit are the same, as well as the conductor.

All four singers in the Youku video found by Umut later performed in the Unhasu Orchestra. In this Youtube video I can recognize at least Ham Kum-ju 함금주 and Pek Mi-yong 백미영. Their performance may be this one announced by the KCNA in 20081106

    • I received information from China telling that the date of the Youku video performance was 2010.04.25, given for the celebration of the 78th anniversary of the Korean People’s Army. Thus it did not predate the establishment of UO. So Un-hyang and Hwang Un-mi had performed with UO during the Day of the Sun celebrations, of which the 2010.04.17 concert video has been published and commented here. For this 2010.04.25 concert they were apparently loaned to the Korean People’s Army Song and Dance Ensemble. Was it perhaps a friendly ladylike/gentlemanly gesture towards the anniversary of a neighbouring ensemble?

Hwabuk tells that by that date the following happened, according to the KCNA:

“24.4. A national meeting celebrating the 78th birthday of the Korean People’s Army is held at the April 25 House of Culture in Pyongyang.
24.4. The KPA Song and Dance Ensemble gives a performance at the April 25 House of Culture to celebrate the 78th birthday of the KPA.”

Whether the concert hall is the April 25 House of Culture or not cannot be determined for sure. The photos available in the net seem to be so new that a lot of reconstruction certainly has happened over the years. But the stage appears to be of the same size.

This movement of people between ensembles is always interesting. Even if the general habitus of a certain ensemble may be “civilian”, its members only need to change dress to become “military”. They perform same kind of songs irrespective of the dress.

    • Thanks a lot for this. Your observation seems to be totally correct. The repertoire appears to be the same as in the 20101006 concert, even though the songs are given in a different order. The location definitely is different, and no specific dates are given.
