Comments: Not only is the choir missing, also the orchestra appears to be smaller. Even in better videos it is nearly impossible to count the musicians individually, and in this one it is practically impossible. Anyway, there could now be about 55 people in the orchestra, while UO as its best can have had about 70. Cellos and contrabasses can be seen best; the orchestra has had even 10 people there, but now appears to have 7.  At least 2 saxophone players and the harpist have disappeared. The kayagum player has moved to play the harp.

The directing and shooting of the camera work appears different from usual. No close ups on solists, nor on musicians. Everything is amateurish, and the video quality is rather bad. Editing of names has been done with a font different from usual. A possible reason for this could be that the best technical experts were transferred to take care of the Moranbong Band; MBB had its own concert in the much larger Ryukyong Chung Ju-yung Gymnasium in the same day. The fall of UO seems to start from here. It is getting second rate treatment in the Pyongyang musical establishment.

17.28 신고산타령 Singosan tharyŏng Ballad of New Kosan 新高山打令
Traditional song, various versions exist in both the North and the South. In the colonial period South Hamgyong Province (咸鏡南道) there was a town called 고산 高山 Kosan (High Mountain). The province has been since divided; the part in the DPRK carries still the same name (함경남도), and the town is in 고산군 高山郡 Kosan-gun, which can be found in Google Maps, while the southern part is now in the ROK province of 강원도 江原道 Kangwondo. In 1913 a train station was built on the outskirts the town, and the station as well as the new urban area that sprang around it became called 신고산 = New Kosan (New High Mountain). The song lyrics centre on the station, telling about the emotions of mothers, whose children left home for work somewhere far away as servants, labourers, or soldiers.

Two different info about the lyricist
SA-studio: Composition: Ri Jong-o 리종오, lyrics: Choe Ro-sa 최로사
KCNA: Composition: Ri Jong-o 리종오, lyrics: Choe Jun-kyong 최준경, 2009
SA-studio’s info is older, last updated in 2005.04.09, while KCNA’s is from 2009.1.8. It can well be that Choe Jun-kyong rewrote the lyrics in 2009 for some specific occasion, but at least UO here sings with the original lyrics, though only the first two stanzas, leaving the third out. I have found no info about the age of the original lyrics. Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble with Ri Kyong Suk as solist performs here http://youtu.be/uQoo1ruHE9g the whole song, and that recording must be from the 1980s.
