Kim Jong Il old

Date: 2012 January 05-11
Theme: The Cause of the Sun Will Be Immortal, continuation of the 2012 New Year concerts
Place: East Pyongyang Grand Theatre
Audience: All kinds of people
KJU not present
Choir: c. 70, KWGU students strengthened by Mansudae Yesuldan singers
KCNA: various days
Published: YouTube, two addresses, same video
Quality: not very good. Resolution 320 × 240.

Comments: Exact dating is problematic. One of the videos claims that it was recorded in 20120105, but the order of songs that KCNA gives for that day is different. It does not prove anything in one way or another, but the exact date simply cannot be established. The repertoire seems to have been quite much the same in each day, but not exactly.

The state and the party needed also a musico-psychological handling of the death of the previous leader, and UO rose to the occasion. It gave good, deeply emotional performances day after day, until some 12 000 people had heard them.

KJI, who had been the moon while he lived, rapidly moved after his death to the religious category of the sun with his father, while Kim Jong-un now was placed to the position where his legitimacy was drawn from the preceding two generations. This took place with background videos, and also new KJU songs began to be performed by UO. It was a very professional orchestra, and always performed with skill whatever was needed.

01.13.23 발걸음 Parkŏrum Footsteps パルコルム ・ 足取り・ 歩み
Composition & lyrics: Ri Jong-o 리종오 1991 / 2009. The song is usually said to have been composed in 2009 for Kim Jong-un, but KJI’s Japanese chef Fujimoto Kenji has claimed that it was originally made for the 9th birthday of KJU in 1 August 1992 by the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, for whom Ri Jong-o composed at that time. In 2009 the song was only rearranged to large ensembles and put into heavy use as the first public hymn for KJU, announcing him as the heir of his father, and performed often by military choirs from 2009 onwards. In January 2012 it was a well known song.
UO plays here only a few seconds of the heavy tones of Parkorum. On the screen KJI sits tired in the background, while KJU stands energetic on the foreground.

01.13.45 나가자 조선아 Nagaja Josŏna Forward Korea 進もう朝鮮よ
This song is different from the KJU song 나가자 조선아 병진 앞으로 Nagaja Josŏna pyŏngjin aphŭro Forward Korea, forward side by side 進め朝鮮よ、併進、前へ, which became public in April 2013. Nagaja Josŏna was made for KJU probably in 2011 and performed by UO already in the New Year’s concert in 2012.01.01
Composition: Jon Gwon 전권, lyrics: Yun Du-gun 윤두근
Grande finale starts already here

01.15.42 김정일장군의 노래 Kim Jong Il janggun ye nore Song for General Kim Jong Il 金正日将軍の歌
Composition: Sol Myong-sun 설명순, lyrics: Sin Un-ho 신운호, 1997
The song was created first in 1995 with the title 영원토록 받들리 우리 장군님 “We Will Eternally Venerate You, Our Commander”. However, the title was changed – possibly under the order or wish by Kim Jong Il’s wife 고용희 Ko Yong Hui – https://www.nknews.org/2018/03/cults-of-the-forgotten-wives-kim-song-ae-and-ko-yong-hui/
during the occasion of KJI’s 55 birthday. Thus the song became an equivalent for the 1946 song ‘김일성장군의 노래’ ”Song for General Kim Il Song”, as KJI then was the sole leader of North Korea after the death of KIS in 1994. A long analysis of the song in Japanese in
