Comment: Kim Jong-il had his final stroke in 2011.12.17, when UO’s preparations for the next New Year concert must have been well advanced already. Some of the more melancholy songs obviously were usable also in the new situation, the rest of the repertoire simply had to be changed so that it fit the new situation. Perhaps for that reason the concert was given a day late, in January 1. And if the idea had been to have a cozy concert in the Unhasu Theatre for high state officials, that plan was abandoned, and surprisingly ordinary looking people of all ages fill the rows of the much larger East Pyogyang Grand Theatre.

Audience 20120101 s

The visual style changed immediately, the audience is now shown often. The audience became an actor in the televized performance, in addition to the ensemble.

Same dresses as in 20120105 this is 20120101 s

Musicians are in military uniform, singers in the usual civilian clothing. They wore the same dresses also in the subsequent memorial concerts.

What was performed in the first concert after the death of KJI? KCNA gives a long list of songs:

A new song made for KJU in 2011 https://youtu.be/ONlR5YvDFS4 … performed already in 20120101; KJU is mentioned in it
http://www.kcna.co.jp/today-rodong/2013/04/2013-04-13-rodong.html

The YouTube video that KCNA published proves that UO performed also the song Parkŏrum, although KCNA does not mention it in the list of songs. Parkorum is a song created for Kim Jong Un in 2009; he is not yet mentioned in it by his name, but the lyrics let the listener understand that a new power is approaching with heavy footsteps.

발걸음 Parkŏrum Footsteps パルコルム ・ 足取り・ 歩み
Composition & lyrics: Ri Jong-o 리종오, 2009
Only these two verses were performed, likewise in the following concert:

발걸음 발걸음 더 높이 울려퍼져라
찬란한 미래를 앞당겨 척척척
Parkŏrŭm parkŏrŭm tŏ nophi ullyŏphŏ jyŏra
chanranan mirerŭl aphdanggyŏ chŏkchŏkchŏk
The steps resonate loudly
Leading us to a glittering future
