Comment: Kim Jong-il’s official birthday was 16 February; i.e., the day next to this concert, and the whole month was full of diplomatic greetings and celebrations. As Rudiger Frank commented (http://38north.org/2012/01/rfrank011112/) in 2012, while KJI was alive, one of the images connected with him was the moon, which reflected the light of his father Kim Il-song. KIS was the sun, the originator, who established the state and gave it a direction to pursue. KJI built up his legitimacy on being the prophet of his father, the person who knew best how to carry on the intentions of KIS. Only from 2009 onwards there were careful attempts at building a basis of legitimacy for himself. The videos sometimes shown at the background still tell mostly the legitimation story based on KIS, even though KIS had been dead already over 15 years, since 1994. The grandson Kim Jong-un does not appear in the videos until the death of KJI, although his grooming as the heir started already in 2009, but only slowly and carefully, attesting to Frank’s estimation that the power transition was expected to take a long time. In Unhasu Orchestra concerts he thus still was invisible, including the KCNA lists of important participants.

There exists also an older song with the same title and with a recording by the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, composed by Pak Jin-guk 박진국 with lyrics by Kim Man-yong 김만영, date unknown, whose subject is KIS. This one is a KJI song, and it may have been made purposefully for his birthday celebration. This is also the first known performance of the song. Curiously, its name was not announced; perhaps it did not yet have a settled name at that day.

There appears a rocket in the video, depicting a successful launch of a satellite to the space. This is the Kwangmyŏngsŏng-2 = 광명성 2호 = Bright Star 2 satellite, launched with an Unha-2 은하-2, 銀河 Galaxy carrier rocket in 5 April 2009. North Korea has claimed that the launch was successful, while the US and Japan have claimed that its first stage fell into the Japan Sea, and its second stage to the Pacific Ocean, without delivering the satellite to any orbit, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unha . Judging from the size of celebrations after the truly successful satellite launch attempt in 12 December 2012, the 2009 launch indeed seems to have been a failure. Nevertheless, it was claimed as a success, as also this video attests.
