49.49 신고산타령 Singosan tharyŏng Ballad of New Kosan 新高山打令
Traditional song, various versions exist in both the North and the South. In the colonial period South Hamgyong Province (咸鏡南道) there was a town called 고산 高山 Kosan (High Mountain). The province has been since divided; the part in the DPRK carries still the same name (함경남도), and the town is in 고산군 高山郡 Kosan-gun, which can be found in Google Maps, while the southern part is now in the ROK province of 강원도 江原道 Kangwondo. In 1913 a train station was built on the outskirts the town, and the station as well as the new urban area that sprang around it became called 신고산 = New Kosan (New High Mountain). The song lyrics centre on the station, telling about the emotions of mothers, whose children left home for work somewhere far away as servants, labourers, or soldiers.

Ri Kyong-suk 리경숙, 李京淑, one of the loveliest 1980s stars of Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, can sometimes be glimpsed in the choir. Here at 04.43. Still beautiful.

Ri was especially famed for her performance of songs like Pangapsumnida (https://youtu.be/8sFz9MONoSE) and Arirang (https://youtu.be/snzS4TIWimc). Mansudae Yesuldan’s choir apparently became the working place for a number of aging stars. If she was born in c. 1970, as claimed in Wikipedia (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ri_Kyong_Suk), she was nearly forty by 2009. The front stage tended to be reserved for much younger singers.
